Huize Walden

Aerated wetland at nursery home in Belgium

Huize Walden is a nursery home with 200 inhabitants and 50 personel members. Rietland already constructed a vertical flow sand-filter type CW there, back in 2003. But in 2016, the capacity needed to be expanded considerably due to the bulding of extra appartments. The old constructed wetland was removed and at the same space a new but aerated one was built that could treat the total of the waste water after the reconstruction of the home.

In 2016, research was done by a PhD student of Ghent University that showed that this 240 m² aerated wetland removed all the pharmaceuticals from the wastewater by 99% or more, which is a very good result.
